Bearsted Football Club’s wonderful association

In the true tradition of Bearsted Football Club their under 14’s team went out to Acheres in France and were unlucky to just miss out on winning the trophy after taking part in a competition over the weekend 22nd May playing against some very talented multi - national opposition. With Bearsted having a close association with the French town Of Acheres, situated just west of Paris over the past 29 years, it was fitting that after all this time there is still a keenness to perpetuate such a unique relationship by being able to accept the invite to go over and take part.

After having arrived in Paris on the Friday they were thrilled to be met by their hosts who were able to find time to take a trip up the Eiffel Tower before meeting up with a Portuguese team and be bussed to their destination. The next day saw the opening of the competition with the Bears side playing against German opposition beating them soundly 6-0. Later in the day however their next match proved to be more difficult. This time losing to an Algerian side 0-3 although seemingly enjoying much of the possession. On the Sunday they made up for this by beating host team Acheres 2-0 who started as the competition favourites. Unfortunately in the afternoon the English side were not able to reproduce quite the same success and lost once more to a very skilful Moroccan team 3-0. However, the main feature of this very enjoyable weekend was how well they were welcomed and treated over the whole time by their French hosts who made every effort in both accommodating and entertaining exclusively the boys and their parents of Bearsted.

Following on from the success of this trip, this year Bearsted once more look forward to receiving the senior Acheres people whom many over the years have become personal friends. and who remain fully committed to maintaining the close association. For anybody who may be interested they arrive on Friday 11th June. It  is intended that this weekend is one of much enjoyment, taking in lots of football, notably the opening games of the World Cup, include common interest with both France and England both playing. As an added piece of entertainment Bearsted Football Club are staging their annual open day at Honey Lane where all 22 sides are represented playing matches of different format some against chosen outside opposition. Not least of all when Bearsted play Acheres. The whole weekend will eventually culminate with a farewell lunch on Sunday 13th June at the Weald of Kent Golf Club after which the visitors return to France in preparation to once more welcoming Bearsted Football Club back next year.

One important point to add is that this year the Town of Acheres is bringing over with them their Mayor and it is with great privilege that Bearsted Football Club are able to look forward to also be joined by his counterpart the Mayor of Maidstone.
